DAMASCUS, SYRIA - “ALLARTNOW” a statement, a request, a demand. The here and ‘Now’ of Syrian Contemporary Art is rapidly coming to international attention.
A burgeoning New media arts scene is on the rise and in direct
opposition to the historically stagnant and commercialised arts
community.
Video art is at the forefront of this bold progression. Abir Boukhari,
the driving force behind ALLARTNOW and integral in Syria’s 1st International Video Art Festival 2009, explains
that the accessibility of production and distribution of video art is a savvy financial and logistical move. Syrian artists realise the potential and are engaging with film festivals abroad.
In a back alley off a back alley, in Damascus’ Old City, the All
Art Now studio/gallery lies somewhat hidden. Behind an anonomous door a collective of artists gather in a courtyard surrounded by exhibition spaces. The free reign approach of ALLARTNOW’s gallery allows it’s revolving stable of 10 artists, including current British Artist in residence, Tobias Collier, to take ownership of the space, in stark contrast to the prescriptive capitalist models of rival dealer galleries.
“My Gallery is a lab, a space for people to try new things,” says
Abir. “We are here to show the change, we are here to change the way
of thinking within the fine arts establishment.”
With the growing support of international cultural instituations and
even the local municipiality (where permission is required for
cultural activities), ALLARTNOW’s focus on nuturing emerging talent
has dual purpose: the international development and credibility of
Syrian art identity; and recognition and acceptance of new art forms
within the status quo arts institutions of Syria today.
