William Lamson is a Brooklyn based artist who works in video, photography, performance and sculpture. His work addresses issues of masculinity, amateurism, science, play and the quixotic quest for personal heroism that accompanies these subjects. Have a cruise around his site absolutly brillant stuff

ARTIST STATEMENT

Standing on the shoulders of other people’s dreams could perhaps be the most pathetic of all dreams. The intent of my work is to create something short of its outcome. My goal is to create the idea of an object that remains a dream. The objects I create are based on fictions, rather than realities. I have always been interested in the ephemeral worlds established in film, or even in popular culture. Fictions or established hearsay allow for a flawed interpretation, which leads to a flawed result. The sublime is unattainable, and not an option. I further amplify this experience by only using my memory to construct my images. Failure is imminent. I find humor allows me to enjoy this experience, and I in turn build humor into the worlds established by my work. I have chosen to depict these states with unfinished wood, and other materials which convey a sense of the temporal. I find the beauty in life lies in between moments. My work offers a sense of what could be and what could never be simultaneously.

Foreign Correspondents Henley & Strong reporting

DAMASCUS, SYRIA - “ALLARTNOW” a statement, a request, a demand. The here and ‘Now’ of Syrian Contemporary Art is rapidly coming to international attention.

A burgeoning New media arts scene is on the rise and in direct
opposition to the historically stagnant and commercialised arts
community.

Video art is at the forefront of this bold progression. Abir Boukhari,
the driving force behind ALLARTNOW and integral in Syria’s 1st International Video Art Festival 2009, explains
that the accessibility of production and distribution of video art is a savvy financial and logistical move. Syrian artists realise the potential and are engaging with film festivals abroad.

In a back alley off a back alley, in Damascus’ Old City, the All
Art Now studio/gallery lies somewhat hidden. Behind an anonomous door a collective of artists gather in a courtyard surrounded by exhibition spaces. The free reign approach of ALLARTNOW’s gallery allows it’s revolving stable of 10 artists, including current British Artist in residence, Tobias Collier, to take ownership of the space, in stark contrast to the prescriptive capitalist models of rival dealer galleries.

“My Gallery is a lab, a space for people to try new things,” says
Abir. “We are here to show the change, we are here to change the way
of thinking within the fine arts establishment.”

With the growing support of international cultural instituations and
even the local municipiality (where permission is required for
cultural activities), ALLARTNOW’s focus on nuturing emerging talent
has dual purpose: the international development and credibility of
Syrian art identity; and recognition and acceptance of new art forms
within the status quo arts institutions of Syria today.

Agnes Montgomery

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I dont have much to say about Agnes collages they are self explanatory really, they are nostalgic, delicate, reverie inducing beautiful arrangements. They are probably recognized most from Panda Bears album person pitch and some singles that he released. What i like about them best is them blown up real big don’t know about printing onto canvas though which he has done for one of his recent exhibitions. picture-21 (more…)

FRANK A. MAGNOTTA

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

These are some great graphite drawings on paper by Frank A. Magnotta from Brooklyn NY.

He has done illustrations for time magazine and beautiful/decay magazine.

The work on his website is mostly Surrealist architecture and portraiture and is hard to pinpoint any immediate influences. But in his own words he explains that he is bringing together all of these related, but somehow disparate, elements from our contemporary culture and combining them into aberrant constructions. Taken from a great interview in fecalface.com
