Mutant Anxiety

James Benjamin Franklin,
The Flood, 2009
Hitherto touching down in San Fran, a great deal of what i’d seen there had been 10861km away through the magical telescopic lens of the internet.Mutant Anxiety @ the Michael Rosenthal Gallery afforded the chance to inspect works on a microscopic level.
The detail in James Bejamin Franklins paintings was minute, comprising of granular brushstrokes in areas sporting hair in particular. The subject matter of his imagery commincated well the psychological disposition of anxiety - uneasy body language, muted colour and distant eyes. All James Bejamin Franklins paintings were sealed in a transparent glossy resin.
Another artists works that tickled my fancy was Jane Fines, which explores the space where collage and illustration intersect, an aesthic i worked with on my last exhibition. It was interesting to view her approach.
Other artists on show included; Megan Whitmarsh, Matt Furie, Clara Fialho, Veronica De Jesus, R Nicholas Kuszyk, Kelly Allen and Derek Weisberg.
The show runs through till 9th January 2010

Menagerie Collective
Saturday, December 19th, 2009
‘Menagerie Collective‘ is a approxiately 20 person collective out of San Fran & Santa Cruz, they held this Exhibition @ the Big Umbrella. The Works ranged in price from $45 to $7000 USD, which reflected quite a significant range in price and ability (..n me opinion anyway)
Items that took my fancy included the spiraling picket fence ‘Status Quo’ by Anna Huemmer and the illustrated envelope series by Jascha Owens.

Open Source Embroidery

Becky Stern,
LilyPad Arduino Embroidery: A Tribute to Leah Buechle, 2008
High’low there,
After a rather mammoth 12km wonder around San Francisco to find a particular camera today, we happened across an exhibition @ The Museum of Craft and Folk Art that tingled the eye’s and the ear’s (sum more about the latter in the following post).
Open Source Embroidery is a travelin exhibition that included embroidered ASCII art, a DJ door, hexadecimal puns and Arduino Lilypads. The purpose of the exhibition is to “investigate’s how the open source software development model has been incorporated into the language of cultural participation”.
The participatory model of open source software is ubiquitous across the net, WordPress which most ‘blogs’ employ, being one such example. It will be quite interesting to see if ‘Open Source Art’ garners as much momentum/attention as its on-line contemporaries….. hope so.
..found the camera & here’s sum more clicks from the show..
