FRED’s EXPERIMENTAL VARIETY SHOW!!

James Robinson (live drawing/painting) / Kieran Monaghan (percussion) / Jeff Henderson (misc) / Daniel Beban (electronics)

In recent years, artist James Robinson has had a string of residencies in New York and NZ and worked in an old grain store in Whanganui.
His paintings have been called “jarring, antagonistic, like overgrown cultures on a sterile laboratory bench. Torn and scorched, their massive canvases are stuck with thick worms of white paint, deflated sacs of resin, coarse sutures of woollen yarn, and mandalas of nails.”

James will be making a live drawing/painting to the sounds of the wonderful Kieran Monaghan (Mr. Sterile Assembly) along with Jeff Henderson and Daniel Beban.

Warwick Donald (piano mate) and Nell Thomas (theremin)

This is not something you’d want to miss out on. Warwick has just bought this really crazy old contraption call the Piano Mate that turns an ordinary upright piano into a a beautiful bleeping, glitching, squealing wall of electronic sound! You have to witness it to believe it! It’s like Derek Bailey playing piano. Rising theremin star Nell Thomas will take this cathedral of noise to another dimension!

Hermione Johnson (prepared piano) / Isaac Smith (double bass) / Gerard Crewdson (trombone)

The brilliant improvising pianist Hermione Johnson in a trio with the two of the greats!!

plus a film!!
Xogenesis James Robinson, Rowan Wernham and others with original sound and music by Chris Knox!

MONDAY 24th May, 7pm,    $gold coin

Violist extraordinaire Chris Prosser hosts a listening session
exploring the work of 3 contemporary improvising solo violinists: Mark Feldman, Iva Bittova and Leroy Jenkins.

OTHER EVENTS AROUND WELLINGTON THIS WEEK:

Orchestra of Spheres - live to air on Radio Active, Wednesday 19th, 6pm - tune in and bliss out!

Bill Orcutt - Happy, Thursday 20th, 9pm $10. with THE STUMPS + SETH FRIGHTENING/GEORGE D ANGUS

Bill Orcutt emerged as one of the most influential guitar players of the 1990s, alongside drummer Adris Hoyos in the seminal Miami-based free rock band, Harry Pussy.

Orcutt’s plucked lacerations, spooky boogie, and ballistic extraterrestrial blues, bordered by the severe candour of his own ulterior, vocal utterances makes for an unsettling but downright melodious sound invoking the spirits of the late Derek Bailey and John Fahey, Fred McDowell and Joseph Spence.

“Is a cheap play on words. It is cheap but nice, like the Casio watch you bought from the flea market. It shines.”

Check out this sound project to submit your take based on the simple context prompt…
Idea is to compile compilations derived from a singular departure point. All submissions welcome from experimental noise to classical… should be an interesting first selection… keep tuned.

DANIEL BOOBYER

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

dripping-with-poster

Daniel Boobyer is a young singer/songwriter living in Wellington,

His sound is self described as a 2000 year old hurricane caught in a blues musical, If that means Daniel does alternative composition by his own rules sounding intimately honest enough to lean over and put another log on the fire, but with enough experimentation with his song structure to intrigue and keep the bearded intellectuals up all night drinking whiskey discussing string theory. Then id agree.

Come hang out with Daniel and friends at #2 Eva st on Fri.

The Cubical at Stadtbad

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

stadtbad

Greetings fellow Carbon Composites,

.

May has ushered in our 4th month in Berlin, The typical distractions found in uprooting and replanting yourself into different surroundings has been time consuming. Momentium starting to gather again with some exciting projects afoot. The focus since arriving has been to put an exhibition together prior to approaching the galleries.

.

A month back, Pete another NZ artist in these parts kindly offered a section of his studio for me to work in, i jumped at it. The studio space Stadtbad, is in ‘Wedding’ pronounced Vedding auf deutsch. An area of Berlin with a high Turkish population, the turkish are big into bathing and Stadtbad was originally a building that housed bathing quarters and a massive swimming pool, these are still there minus all the water and chlorine. The Snap above and the footy below don’t really capture the scale of the place, its huge.

.

Below is a clip that serves to document the space, i expect the Oskers, Emmys and Globes to start flowing in before the years out.

It captures 5 minutes and 15 seconds of creating lines that didn’t exist 5 minutes and 15 seconds prior.

Music : Whatever was playing in the office…. Blue Pine i believe.

Former Ghosts

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

I always feel soo hungry after listening to electro-goth, this vid managed to suppress those hunger pangs for abit. Its kinda distrubing.

I stubbled across this project on last.fm , the vids made by Paul Rodriguez , the musics Former Ghosts.

Former Ghosts is Freddy Ruppert (the fella in the vid), he collabs on his new album ‘fleurs’ with “Xiu Xiu” and “Ten in the swear jar” front man Jamie Stewart , Nika Roza of Zola Jesus, and Yasmine Kittles of Tearist.
